SOUTH KOREA (OCT)

UHEESKA, ‘NINANO concert’(U-hee Company)

The band UHEESKA blends the energetic vibes of Jamaican ska music, which has a worldwide fan base, with Korea’s traditional yeon-hee, a playful and familiar form of entertainment for Koreans. Embracing the euphoric emotion “shinmyeong (meaning joyfulness in Korean), UHEESKA combines ska and reggae music with a distinct Korean sensibility, offering a refreshing musical experience that resonates both visually and audibly with the audiences, bringing them all together.

Drawing inspiration from a famous advertising slogan, “What kind of people are Koreans?”, two words surface: “han (sorrow)” and “heung (joyfulness).” With the aim to channel “han” into “heung,” UHEESKA showcases performances that are far too lively to be merely enjoyed passively.

The term “ska” is a Jamaican rhythm and is very similar to Korea’s “Hwimori rhythm.” It began with a simple curiosity for what kind of synergy would result when these two music styles with similar sentiments merged. This performance takes what might be considered monotonous traditional arts and transforms them into more accessible music that is also irresistibly engaging, where merely watching and listening to it sets you to groove.
